A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that restores a weak, broken, worn or decayed tooth. Crowns are also used to cover dental implants and endodontically treated teeth.
Crowns can be made of a variety of materials, such as metal, resin and porcelain, and last between five and 15 years.
A dental crown procedure may require two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will take digital photographs of the mouth and create the crown in the office. The patient may have to wait one to two hours for the crown to be made.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown, prepare the permanent crown and cement it in place.
