Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is also the most modern and dynamic metropolis in the Caribbean. The capital, as it is affectionately called, transmits the pulse of Dominican culture, where the old and the new converge perfectly, from the centuries-old architecture and history, to the great shopping centers, art galleries, an active and interesting nightlife and an irresistible gastronomy scene.

Exploring the Colonial City, the first European settlement in the Americas and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990, is a recommended experience for all travelers. This historic neighborhood consists of a maze of narrow streets full of architectural wonders that range from the 16th century to the early 20th century. Its streets will take you to colonial buildings converted into museums, stores, hotels, restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Get on the Colonial Chu Chu train for a 45 minute tour of the area, hire a guide who will take you down the first paved street in America while you share stories, or rent a bike and ride on your own.

Punta Cana

Blessed with one of the longest white-sand coastlines in the Caribbean, a total of 30 miles, accented with coconut palms that seem to reach for the sky, Punta Cana is synonymous with oceanfront rest and relaxation. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Caribbean Sea, from the northern tip at Uvero Alto to the south at Cap Cana, all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels offer all the pampering and comfort of modern beachfront living.

Families can enjoy miniature entertainment centers and water parks for children, while couples will find dreamy wedding locations with secluded beachfront offerings for an even more romantic stay. But you won’t just find fun in the sun, with fine white sand and a crystal-clear, iridescent sea to swim in, fish in, or take a dip among marine life and wrecks. Punta Cana, is also a paradise for golfers, with 10 golf courses located along the coast, a beach escape with luxurious marinas and gourmet dining, and a wellness area with the best spas in the country, including the only Six Senses in the Caribbean.

Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata, where tourism began in the Dominican Republic, is still one of the preferred destinations for visitors. Its spectacular and extensive landscape combines sea, mountains, green valleys, rivers and a number of beaches. Its fertile soil gives rise to cocoa and coffee plantations, while underneath the earth, lies the clearest amber in the world.

The astute explorer, Christopher Columbus knew that there was much to discover on the island’s Atlantic coast, where he eventually found gold deposits, when he saw it from his ship in 1492. Attracted by the clouds shining over Loma Isabel de Torres that illuminated the vast blue coast, he named the area “Puerto Plata”, and settled in La Isabela with a mixed community of Spaniards and Tainos, the first inhabitants of the island. There he built the first church and his first home in the Americas. You can follow the Columbus Trail and tour these archaeological ruins which are now part of a national park.
