Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
We have the best specialists
A tummy tuck – also known as an abdominoplasty – is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the shape and appearance of the abdomen. A tummy tuck involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) is also tightened with stitches. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned appearance.
But where do you start looking for an abdominoplasty in the Dominican Republic? And how do you find a doctor that’s right for you? This is where MEDIX comes in. Our team of Health Managers is here to assist you in your medical journey and help you find a doctor based on the criteria that are important to you.
Quick Details
❱ Individuals with loose or sagging abdominal skin, excess abdominal fat, and weakened abdominal muscles, often due to pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging.
❱ A physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly additional tests as recommended by the surgeon.
❱ Patients should undergo a thorough consultation with the surgeon to discuss their expectations, medical history, and any concerns.
❱ Follow any pre-operative instructions provided by the surgeon, which may include dietary restrictions, cessation of smoking, and adjustments to medication.
❱ Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to and from the surgical facility and assist you during the initial recovery period.
Like any surgical procedure, an abdominoplasty carries certain risks and potential side effects. It’s important to discuss these with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure. While most people have successful results, complications can occur. Here are some of the potential risks and side effects associated with abdominoplasty:
❱ Bleeding: There is a risk of bleeding during or after the procedure. Your surgeon will take steps to minimize this risk, such as using careful surgical techniques and proper suturing. In some cases, additional surgical interventions may be needed to control excessive bleeding.
❱ Infection: Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection. Your surgeon will give you preoperative instructions and prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Signs of infection may include fever, increased pain, redness, swelling, or discharge from the incision site. Immediate medical attention is necessary if infection is suspected.
❱ Scarring: Abdominoplasty involves incisions that result in permanent scars. However, skilled surgeons strive to place incisions in areas that can be easily concealed, such as the bikini line. Over time, scars usually fade and become less noticeable. Proper wound care and following postoperative instructions can help minimize the appearance of scars.
❱ Poor wound healing: In some cases, incisions may heal poorly, resulting in delayed wound healing or wound separation. Factors such as smoking, certain medications, and underlying health conditions can increase the risk of poor wound healing. It’s crucial to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to optimize healing and minimize this risk.
❱ Seroma or hematoma: Fluid collection (seroma) or blood collection (hematoma) under the skin may occur after surgery. These can cause swelling, discomfort, or an increased risk of infection. Your surgeon may use drains during surgery to minimize fluid buildup, or they may need to be suctioned or surgically drained if they develop.
❱ Numbness or altered sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in sensation may occur in the abdominal area or around the incision sites. This may include numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity. In most cases, sensation gradually returns over time, but it may not fully return in all cases.
❱ Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE): These are rare but serious complications that can occur after any surgical procedure. DVT refers to the formation of blood clots in deep veins, typically in the legs, while PE occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs. Your surgeon may take preventive measures, such as prescribing blood-thinning medications or using compression stockings, to minimize the risk of these complications.
❱ Anesthesia Risks: General anesthesia or intravenous sedation is typically used for abdominoplasty. While anesthesia is generally safe, there are inherent risks. These risks may include adverse reactions to anesthesia, respiratory problems, or medication allergies. Your anesthesiologist will evaluate your health and discuss the risks involved with you before the procedure.
